Under the direction of Dr. Andres Pinto, chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences (OMMDS) and assistant dean of Graduate Studies, and Cynthia Lord, associate professor and program director of the Physician Assistant Program at the School of Medicine, a dental school rotation is now included in the PA’s 27-month program. With the goal of strengthened interprofessional training, the Oral Medicine and Physician Assistant Program Collaboration (OMPAC) brings new insight to the importance of oral health to overall health.
American Academy of Oral Medicine Fall Meeting

Dr. Pinto presented at the American Academy of Oral Medicine Fall meeting on November 10, 2018, at the Dana Farber Institute in Boston. He described an interdisciplinary case in oral oncology with local oral medicine, medical oncology, and surgical faculty.
Annual Sleep and Pain Conference

Dr. Pinto attended the annual Sleep and Pain conference at the Hilton O’Hare, Chicago, organized by the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. This was a well-attended event with fantastic speakers and opportunity to network and share cutting-edge knowledge.
Annual Meeting of the European Association of Oral Medicine

Dr. Pinto presented on behalf of the CWRU Oral Medicine group the results of a study assessing the distribution of patient-reported facial pain and risk for sleep disorders at the Annual meeting of the European Association of Oral Medicine (EAOM), held September 27-29 in Gothenburg. He also formed part of a multinational group that formulated a position statement on the management of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis. World Workshop in Oral Medicine

Dr. Pinto participated in the World Workshop in Oral Medicine, held September 24-26 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He took part as a senior consultant to the group addressing current trends on Global Paediatric Oral Medicine practice. This meeting is held every 4-5 years to update the current science in the field. More than 45 delegates participated in the Workshop, from more than 20 countries. EDTalks

Dr. Pinto formed part of the organizing committee of the first edition on EDTalks, an informal forum when faculty from CWRU and OHSU presented their work. They also highlighted the utility of membership in organized dentistry as a valuable support to their faculty position. The event was part of the Ohio Dental Association 152nd Annual Meeting in Columbus on September 2018. Pictured are the two members of CWRU, Drs. Ivan Stojanov and Ali Syed. In attendance were more than 40 participants, including the current Deans of both Ohio Dental Schools, Drs. Kenneth Chance and Patrick Lloyd.
International Association of Dental Research Meeting, London

Dr. Pinto presented on behalf of the CWRU oral medicine group at the International Association of Dental Research meeting in London, on July 26th, 2018. His oral presentation was on the assessment of the clinical significance of pain relief in dental acute pain. He is pictured with a faculty member Dr. Jing Zhang from Wuhan University, China.
Incoming Oral Medicine Graduate Interns

Dr. Pinto and incoming oral medicine graduate interns at CWRU. The oral medicine training program at Case Western includes intensive instruction in oral medicine, orofacial pain, and dental sleep medicine and leads to an internship certificate or may be extended to an MScD degree(additional years of training).

Dr. Pinto lectured at the Dental Sleep Medicine MS degree course at University Alfonso X in Madrid, Spain on July 16, 2018 (see attached) his lecture was on sleep and facial pain. Dr. Pinto presented results from a recent study from his group at the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in Baltimore, exploring the association between altered sleep, daily activities and oral function in patients presenting for evaluation of acute dental pain.
International Communication in Dental Sleep Medicine

Dr. Pinto hosted visiting Professor Pedro Mayoral from Madrid, Spain. Dr. Mayoral is a Professor of Orthodontics at Alfonso X University and director of the advanced training program (MSc) in Dental Sleep Medicine. He presented at CWRU and the Pulmonary Medicine Division at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. His lecture topics included “Phenotypes in Dental Sleep Medicine” and “Keys for oral appliance therapy selection”.
ICD Presentation in Guatemala

Dr. Pinto presented on behalf of the International College of Dentists on May 18, at the Francisco Marroquin University. He gave a day-long lecture on Overview of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain to a group of national and international School of Dentistry Deans and practitioners. He also participated in the Induction ceremony of Region 21 ICD Fellows.
The American Academy of Oral Medicine Annual Meeting 2018

Dr. Pinto was named Vice President (third from the right), American Academy of Oral Medicine, at the national meeting in San Antonio, Texas. He will be working closely with the current president, Dr. Eric Stoopler, and the Executive Committee to extend initiatives for the Academy in the upcoming year. The American Academy of Oral Medicine, an organization of oral medicine professionals founded in 1954, is dedicated to advancing excellence in patient care, education, and research in the field of Oral Medicine and promoting access to quality, affordable, and cost-effective expert Oral Medicine care.
Fellowship in International College of Dentists

Dr. Pinto was granted Fellowship in the International College of Dentists on October 19, 2017. He was one of a select group of 11 oral health professionals honored from District 7, comprising the States of Indiana and Ohio.
The International College of Dentists was established in 1928 in order to promote cordial relations within the profession and help disseminate scientific information. Fellowship was granted by invitation only, in recognition of outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service, and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind.

Dentists Also Treat Sleep Apnea

Dr. Pinto becomes one of four qualified dentists in the Greater Cleveland area, who are recognized to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM).
The AADSM is dedicated to leading and promoting the role of dentistry in the management of sleep-disordered breathing. It also offers professional education and resources to dental sleep medicine professionals.
Presentation at World Sleep Congress in Prague

Dr. Pinto had a great time in attending the World Sleep Congress, which was held in Prague, the Czech Republic from 10/7/2017 to 10/11/2017. He also presented the recent study about Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Orofacial Pain from his group.
The World Sleep Congress is a spectacular conference held by World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) and World Sleep Federation (WSF). Experts in sleep medicine and research gathered from all over the world to exchange ideas and explore the future of sleep medicine.
How Ohio's New Prescription Opioid Rules Will Impact Dentists

Effective August 31, 2017, dentists are among health professionals included in a new ruling limiting prescriptions for opioids in the state of Ohio. The rule will limit prescriptions to 7 days for adults and 5 days for minors for acute pain.
